“Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god.” Aristotle
So what is going on with our social nature? Research from studying over 1 million minds shows that the “social self” – how we see ourselves relative to others and our ability to form collaborative relationships – has experienced the biggest decline among all dimensions of well-being, with young adults being 3-5 times less adept socially than the oldest working generations. This could have a profound impact on society as they become the largest workforce demographic in just a few years.
